THE ADVENTURES OF YATS AND HIS FAMOUS
NEW ORLEANS JAZZLAND BAND PRESENTS
Queen Carnival
The ruler of all the swamps and bayous in Louisiana, she leads her
subjects from Nova Scotia on an odyssey to a new home after being run out by the
rival pixies, the Canucks; She settles in an impenetrable part of the Manchac swamp
just outside of New Orleans known as the Caddo. She possesses the Cajun Pixie’s Book
of Life, in which they all live by.
Dixie the Fiddle playing Cajun Pixie
The daughter of Queen Carnival;
Protector of all residents in Pixie Parish. She’s a beautiful, fairy Cajun princess with
luminous, gossamer wings that communicates through her fiddle playing. Her fiddle
not only allows her to charm her audience with its magical tones but is also the
source of wondrous powers that enable her to protect and care for the residents of
Pixie Parish. She’s discovered by Yats, who she assists in finding their way back
home.
Yats Yea-u-rite
Son of Matthew and Mama Ju-nee Yea-u-rite and brother of
Antoine Yea-u-rite; He graduated from St Augustine High School where he was voted
the best trumpet player in the Marching One Hundred Band. He won several
competitions with his trumpet playing. He is the founder of his Famous New Orleans
Jazzland Band, the most beloved band in the city. He was born in the musically rich
neighborhood of Treme and leads his bandmates on a quest to rebuild and save the
soul of New Orleans after it is devastated by an unannounced storm.
Antoine “Tiptoe” Yea-u-rite
Younger Brother of Yats Yea-u-rite. He is a
talented clarinet player in the band who also performs sleight of hand magic tricks for
tourists in the French Quarter. He earned his nickname because of his tapdancing
abilities and from sneaking in late at night wearing his tap shoes after playing gigs,
waking his mother, who would yell out, “Tiptoe, please!”
Mama Ju-nee
Mother of Yats and Antoine “Tiptoe” Yea-u-rite; She is a beautiful,
talented Creole chef who is affectionately known as Mama Ju-nee. She is hands-
down the best cook in the neighborhood. She is revered as the “Queen of Creole
Cuisine.” She has a heart big enough to hold the world and assists Yats and the band
in their efforts to rebuild New Orleans after the storm.
Matt Yea-u-rite
Father of Yats and Antoine “Tiptoe” Yea-
u-rite; He is the captain of the Steamboat Creole Queen and assists his family’s
efforts to rebuild New Orleans.
Mario “Tubby” Galvez
The band’s portly tuba player; He grew up in mid-city
New Orleans, and his family owns Galvez’s Heating & Plumbing service in St. Bernard
Parish. His grandfather, four times removed, was the first Spanish governor of
Louisiana, General Bernardo de Galvez. Honored by President George Washington
himself for winning the battle of Baton Rouge, he was invited to the first 4th of July
parade in 1779. Mario can hold a note longer than any other tuba player this side of
the Mississippi river, and when people hear him play, they often think it’s a
steamboat on the river, blowing its stack.
Datz the Clown
The band’s bass drum playing clown; Datz joined the band after
he ran away from a traveling circus when it visited New Orleans. When the Who Dat
nation spotted him performing outside the St. Louis Cathedral, they whispered under
their breath, “Datz the Clown!” so, he became known thereafter as Datz the Clown
from New Orleans. He has a love for seafood and wears white shrimp boots and a
multicolored afro.
Tommy II Short Babtiste
The diminutive (he stands a whopping four-foot-
tall), infamous trombone player from Creole Louisiana; He’s a musical prodigy that
can play any instrument known to man. As a student at Bell City High, he earned a
full scholarship to the Tulane School of Music, where he caught the attention of
Yats and earned a place in his Famous New Orleans Jazzland Band.
Tujaques (2 – Jacks)
A huge, protective, saxophone playing alligator that has a
heavy Cajun accent. He wears a red sash around his waist and a jaunty pirate hat that
he won in a card game against the famous Jean Lafitte with a pair of jacks. He’s a
lifelong friend of Dixie. After helping Dixie get Yats and the band back home, Tujaques
becomes a member of Yats’ Famous New Orleans Jazzland Band.
Toulouse (the Manchac Box Turtle)
He’s a box turtle that lives in the Manchac
swamp. He has big eyes and long eyelashes, with rounded features. He’s shy and
bashful, has a crush on Dixie. He is saved by Yats and the band and warns them of all
the dangers lurking along the shores of Manchac.
King Cotton (the Maniacal Snake)
King Cotton is a cigar smoking,
cottonmouth water moccasin. He’s black and fat, looks like a gangster, and is hiding
in cypress knees with his gang of undesirables, ready to pounce. He has piercing
eyes and a viper-shaped head. He fancies himself as the mafia boss of the Manchac
swamp.
Colosimeaux (the Prehistoric Gator)
He is the last of his kind, the oldest
living creature in Manchac; a prehistoric, primordial alligator that is at least twenty
five feet in length. He’s menacing and is the most feared creature in Manchac, and
Tujaques’ nemesis.
Moxie the Mink
Moxie is a bit of a busybody that keeps an eye on the goings-
on in the Manchac swamp. She’s sharp-tongued, sassy, and stutters and is Dixie’s
confidential informant.
Bazou (the Great Horned Owl)
Bazou is the all-knowing, all-seeing voice of
wisdom that helps Yats navigate through the impenetrable area of the swamp known
as the Caddo. This is where the Cajun pixies live. He's perched in a 2,000 year old Bald
Cypress Tree.
Pow Wow & His Wolf Pup, Shatta
A member of the local Indian tribe; With
the assistance of his wolf pup, Shatta, he gathers the herbs and spices Dixie uses to
make her Cajun Pixie Magic Seasoning.
The Ginny Woman
The Ginny Woman is a humorous, Creole, Voodoo, crystal
ball-reading fortune teller who reunites Yats with his family by reading her magical
crystal ball.
Sammy the Snapper
An ancient alligator snapping turtle the enforcer and
underboss of King Cotton.
Pappy the Possum
is a crotchety old marsupial, Yats mistakes for a corpse; until he pokes him with a
stick and the non-stop farting stench gives him away. Grumpy, gassy, and
unapologetic, Pappy still manages to point Yats in the right direction
on his quest to discover the source of the fiddle playing.
